Spanish Courses for Grades K-12
Courses are offered from September-May
SUR offers online Spanish courses for students in grades 4–12, available one-on-one or in small class groups. In person courses can be arranged at the student(s) home or school depending on the location. To determine each student's proficiency level and learning needs, all students complete an initial placement assessment.
SUR comprehensive curriculum begins with Spanish I and continues through advanced AP Spanish courses. The Spanish program and courses taught at SUR aligns to the ACTFL World Readiness Standards, State Standards, and National Standards for learning languages. Accelerated and Heritage Speaker options are available.
After successfully completing the course, students receive a letter of completion that includes course overview and course content. Please note that final placement and credit decisions are made at the discretion of the receiving school or district.
K-3 grade
Young learners (K–3) learn Spanish through songs, games, stories, and play, building vocabulary, confidence, and a love of language.
4th & 5th grade
Spanish I Foundations
Learn present-tense verbs, basic sentence structure, common vocabulary, descriptions, likes and dislikes, school life, family, and everyday routines.

Middle School
Spanish I
Build a strong foundation in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Learn present-tense verbs, noun-adjective agreement, question formation, daily routines, school, family, food, and cultural topics.

Spanish II
Expand your communication skills through past tense, reflexive verbs, direct and indirect object pronouns, travel, celebrations, health, shopping, and daily life in Spanish-speaking cultures.

Spanish III
Strengthen fluency through more advanced grammar, including preterite vs. imperfect, commands, future and conditional forms, and expanded conversation, reading, and writing.

High School Courses
Spanish I
Develop the foundation for Spanish communication. Learn pronunciation, present-tense verbs, essential grammar, common vocabulary, and cultural practices while building confidence in speaking and writing.

Spanish II
Continue developing fluency through past-tense narration, expanded vocabulary, object pronouns, reflexive verbs, and real-life communication in familiar situations.

Spanish III
Move toward more independent communication. Learn to narrate in multiple time frames, express opinions, give advice, use commands, and engage with authentic texts and cultural themes.

Spanish IV
Refine accuracy, fluency, and cultural understanding through advanced grammar, discussion, composition, literature, film, current events, and thematic projects.

Spanish V / AP Advanced Spanish
Deepen advanced communication skills through conversation, analytical writing, cultural study, literature, media, and independent projects conducted primarily in Spanish.

Accelerated Spanish I–II
Complete the core content of Spanish I and Spanish II in a streamlined format designed for motivated students who learn quickly or have prior exposure to Spanish.

Spanish for Heritage Speakers
Strengthen academic Spanish for students who already understand or speak Spanish at home. Focus on grammar accuracy, reading comprehension, vocabulary development, writing, and cultural identity.
